A cat-back exhaust system replaces the exhaust components from the catalytic converter to the rear of the vehicle. This section of the exhaust is downstream of emissions-control devices and does not alter their function.

Because of its position, a cat-back system primarily affects how exhaust gases are routed after they exit the catalytic converter, as well as overall sound characteristics.
